NutritionWhat do you think of when you hear the word diet? You think of someone only eating protein, eating no fat, or generally not eating anything fun. Right? This is not what the word means. It is how we have translated it over the last few decades. Diet used to mean what we ate. No negative connotation. Instead we now have to use phrases like nutritional habits, lifestyle changes and eating styles. All because the word "diet" got a bad rap. You can now go on to our USDA website and find lot's of research based information on how we should eat. It's honestly nothing most of us don't already know. lol We just get to a point that it's easier to ignore. It's difficult to eat healthy while driving. Those subway sandwiches tend to fall in our laps. I know this for a fact. I'm working, raising a family, and going to school. Just like you, I'm in the car a lot. But, I refuse to eat fast food and junk anymore. So back to diet. This is about balance. Right now we tend to lean towards fats and proteins. Not just because of fad diets, but because our society has centered eating around that big steak or burger on the plate. We need to balance our diet by adding more fruits and vegetables and whole grains. A balanced diet also includes a variety of these foods. You can't just stick to carrot sticks and get all the nutrients needed. After balance comes portions. We have lost touch with what a portion should be. There was a study that found that most people eating the Lean Cuisine or other frozen meals did lose more weight. This was directly associated to portion size. A portion is about the size of a deck of cards. How many of us cringe when we see a steak or bake potato that small? And yet again, how many cringe in horror when you see that many vegetables on your plate? We've become a society obsessed by portion size. Bigger portions are a better value for our money. This is just not the case. Our health is worth way more than that. Imagine the lower doctor bills and prescription costs by staying healthy and not eating all those extra calories!
