Too Low Fat?

Is there a such thing as too low fat? Quick answer...absolutely, positively yes! We have heard about the eating disorders and how they are so detrimental to our health. Few of us have ever been told the actual medical reasons why they hurt our health though. You don't have to have the "actual" eating disorders to develop many of the same health problems. One such problem is a fat deficiency. I know, most of us don't worry about this, but it is a necessary part of our diet and some of us are not getting enough good fats.

Fat makes up each individual cell in our body. It makes up the membrane that holds it all together. That might show us a little bit why fat is important, but not quite enough reason right? It also cushions our organs. Without the good fat in our bodies the organs would be bumping and scrapping each other. Not a good picture there. It is also where we get our endurance energy. If you are into jogging, cycling, or anything that takes longer than a few minutes, you will need some fat supply to burn. If you are at your target weight already, then this means taking in fat daily in your diet.

30% of our daily calories are to come from fat. No more than 10% of that is to be saturated. Now many are still working on losing weight and you will want lower numbers, more like 20%. Generally most of our fat will come from meat sources. A little will come from veggies and carbohydrates, depending on what you put on them. It is very important that vegetarians watch their fat intake. Since they are not taking in the meat they will have to get their fat from other sources. It is much easier for them to run a deficit. Dieters are the one's that we really worry about though because they are purposely taking the fat out of their diet. Going no fat on a diet, will not help you lose weight healthily. Remember that anytime we cut something completely from our diet, our body will adjust by storing any extra that it can find. Therefore, you will immediately store any fat you eat on a no fat diet.

Cutting out the junkfood and excess fat is always good. Pay attention to the nutritional benefits of the fat you are going to eat. Does it have any nutritional value besides just fat? Is it an easily digestible product or is it all preservatives and man-made or altered ingredients? Try using olive oil in your cooking and salad dressings instead of regular salad oil. Fish, olives and nuts are also full of better fats. As long as you limit your nuts to a handful of course. Wouldn't you rather enjoy that avocado on your salad knowing you need it because you've been eating so well?
